It’s hard to believe Data Points hit the shelves two months ago. (Thank you to everyone who got a copy!) It still feels brand new in my head. I kind of thought that time would slow down after I finished the book (and dissertation), but it seems to be moving even faster now.

137 – For some years, physicists thought that the ‘fine structure constant’, a dimensionless ratio expressing the strength of electromagnetic interaction, was exactly the reciprocal of 137; this imbued the number with near-mythic significance, and a entire book was written about the magical properties of this special number. With further research, the ratio was determined to close to, but not exactly 1/137, so the number lost some of its sheen. A metaphor for so much of life.

As a computer scientist, I have to be prosaic and suggest that the number 2 is the best. It is the only even numbered prime, also a power of two, and the smallest base in which numeric information can be encoded. Spelled in English, it also has two homonyms (to and too). When displayed on your hand in the traditional way, it also doubles for the symbol for peace and can be held over people’s heads to make them look silly in photographs. Clearly there are only two categories of numbers: 2 and everything else.
I’m not sure if it counts as a number, but my favorite numerical expression is 0/0 because 0 over anything is 0, but anything over itself is 1, and anything over 0 is infinity (or undefined, depending on your religion). It’s like a zen koan expressed in a number.

It’s silly, but I’m going with 45,954 – my pubescent, middle school self was very excited when it realized the product of 69 and 666 is a palindrome. The irreverent, immature, and oh-so-nerdy nostalgia that number elicits for me captures the essence of those years perfectly.
I’d love to win another copy so I can finish reading it. So far, 6 of my collegues have “borrowed” mine before returning it saying they have purchased thier own copy. Collegues #6 is a slow reader….

My favourite number is 33 and always has been. It has a certain equilibrium to it. My brother’s favourite number is 32 and we always had long discussions about which number occurs more. 32 being 2 to the 5th, it appears often in relation to computers (e.g. when 32MB RAM was a big deal), while 33 is a third of a 100 and appears on soda cans and beer bottles (33cl). My favorite is 0. It is the beginning of everything.
73 – its a star number so you can make a six pointed star from 73 dots. It is also an emirp number, a pallindrome when converted to binary 1001001. Amazingly the binary consists of seven digits and three 1’s – nice. It also describes something rare and blue in chemistry – it is the atomic number of Tantalum. Plenty of attachment to the visual world in the number 73, so let’s go for that.

o Natural log of e = 1

My 23rd birthday fell on 13th October 2007, which is 13+10+2007=2030.
13th October itself is 13+10=23.
On that day, I took my friends for dinner,spending Rupees 3929. 3+9+2+9=23.
A friend was wearing a tee on which “DEVIL” was written. 2/3=0.666 the devil’s number.
Later that night, I and my date checked into a hotel. Room number 19D. D is the 4th letter of the alphabet. 19+4=23.
Finally, at work, the project I was involved in was code named Vanadium. It’s atomic number is 23.
