Superb! Worth at least a 1,000 words.
Shouldn’t the kid be wearing capri pants?
maybe the swim trunks come from a recessive gene…
Except this isn’t how a lot of genetics works. Traits typically don’t blend. The child of a man and a woman is not a hermaphrodite, for instance.
I agree. I think this is a gross oversimplification.
(it’s a joke, Marty… http://www.answers.com/topic/tongue-in-cheek )
Some traits do, some don’t. There is an entire field of theory called “quantitative genetics” that was developed to handle traits that do seem to be continuous and blend like this.
In fact, it’s particularly relevant to FlowingData because R. A. Fisher invented a substantial chunk of modern statistics specifically for the purpose of understanding the evolution and inheritance of quantitative traits.
Think bigger picture: the child inherited some of the traits of each parent.

Wonderful. I found your blog today, and passed over that picture at least a dozen times before it hit me.
Great picture! I loved Dan and Mark’s comments. I’m so happy you have such funny and intelligent friends.

You must have been happy when taking the picture. It’s indeed a good explanation
Genetics works in way by passing on traits from parents to the offsprings , I guess the hair from the mother and then also some varaition comes along!! that is why we have varied species.
