Crazy, I would guess that it’s because the lack of Christmas and Thanksgiving means that they don’t feel weird eating it in May or something. I was going to suggest that maybe they were native to the Middle East or something, but obviously the whole thing with Thanksgiving is they come from the US (thanks Wikipedia!)
