Vincenzo Cosenza maps social network dominance around the world according to traffic data from Alexa and Google Trends. We see Facebook has apparently overtaken MySpace in the US along with other countries; Orkut is a favorite in Brazil; the people love QQ in China; and then there are a few smaller networks that most of us have probably never heard of unless we live in the country of dominance.
It’s also worth noting that the map was done with IBM’s Many Eyes, so you can interact with the embedded map below. After data culling, the map was probably created in no time.
I personally don’t know anyone who uses anything other than Facebook or LinkedIn. Remember Friendster? People always laugh when I mention it. What do you use?
How come LinkedIn and Netlog are missing…?
I think it’s b/c they didn’t rank in the top 3 in any country
It’s missing Bebo, so the results for e.g. Ireland are way off.

Btw, I met my wife on Friendster in 2004.. we emailed (while cities apart) for about three months before meeting in person.
The site matched people together, very easily, based on interests.. but then the UI got all messed up and they had major user service issues. Facebook swept in about the same time and hasn’t looked back since 2005.

wow, you found your wife on friendster? i don’t remember there being a match feature like that. maybe i joined too late.
The cool thing about Friendster, at least back then, was that you could click on one of your “favorites” hyperlinks and then narrow by demographics.. Not an explicit matching feature, but one that was easy to find people with common interests in your area. We both liked the same peculiar band, and things took off from there..
I believe Friendster will soon/already is be/being replaced by MySpace.
… And MySpace has already/is being replaced by Facebook already.
Of course, their combined user base is still much less than QQ, even if you take into account of double counting and dead accounts. lol!
The map mixes info from Alexa & google.
1/ Alexa is geek-orfiented = biased.
2/ How does the map match Alexa & Gooogle data when they do not coincide ?

Something makes me feel that you haven’t met a lot of people lately :-) I with the map had the comparison done by the actual user base also for that would’ve painted a different picture altogether.
i didn’t make the map, but it’s based on traffic data from alexa and google trends, so it’s at least partially accurate
