Seeing as the weekend is just about here, I’m sure many of you can find a use for this guide. It’s drink recipes hand-drawn like schematics to some circuitry system. I like how color wasn’t an option, so instead they used 42 stripe and dot patterns to differentiate ingredients.
See the full version here [pdf].
My sister sent this one along, but I couldn’t find the original source. Anyone know?
This is really great.
I am going to start a bar.
The original was in color, in fact, I i still have the framed copy in my basement from 15 or so years ago. I think I bought it at the local mass produced dubious art store.
hi mark,
can you maybe scan your copy in high quality? i couldn’t find it anywhere else!
thanks a lot!
It’s 20″x30″ or so, difficult to scan, Contact me directly and I’ll send it to you.
Hi, can you send it to me in color too. I would LOVE that!
Thanks,
[email protected]
I was going to send the physical copy to Nathan.
@Mark – that’d be cool, although i don’t have a giganto scanner either, so i feel like it’d go to waste. maybe just take a digital photo and email that to me?
Hey Mark,
Could you add one more stragler to the list of people you send the color chart.
thanks
Yep, I don’t have the original anymore (some girlfriend or another tossed it) but it was definitely an art store offering in the late 80s or early 90s. It was in color, although the patterns were all distinct so it could easily have been originally in black and white and then color added to sell to the mass market.
I have a 42″ sheetfed scanner, I could scan it for whoever wanted it… contact me at kevin.marsh at gmail.com
I wouold love a poy and am willing to pay – great gift for my engineer husband who loves to play bartender – color preferred. please send info to [email protected]

I have a similar version that I bought from the LSU Mechanical Engineering Student Society in the early 1980s. I don’t know if that was the original, but it uses the same graphics for the ingredients. My version has fewer drinks and it’s in blueprint reverse blue (symbols and lettering in white on a blue background.)

I’d love to have a good scan too, for my blog. Judith

The original was used as a demo print for Calcomp pen plotters back in the late 70’s (which corresponds with the first date in the rev box); so, the original was not in (solid) color. They could have used different color pens, but it still would have been a drawing like the above using stipples for the different ingredients. I used to have a copy that was only in black pen.
That seems correct, my color version has a copyright date of 1987.
Hi Mark,
thank you for your reply.
i don’t have your email, but if you can send it to [email protected] ?
if the quality is good enough i could make a scaleable vector image out of it!
thanks again
Hi Mark,
If at all possible I’d love the colour scan too of this. I know who would benefit from the full thing perfectly! My email is [email protected]

this is just so cool, it’s such an awesome geeky idea d=
keep up the good work on your blog! i love what you’ve been sharing!
Those “stripe and dot” patterns are called hatch patterns. I don’t think they exist just because of lack of color, but also because CAD drawings used to be far more commonly plotted rather than printed. Plotters can’t readily mix colors, and filling areas with solid color is slow and expensive on a plotter.
Also, one can distinguish between patterns more precisely than colors. Imagine you’re trying to differentiate between 50 different materials in a drawing. If two different shades of orange were used to represent two of the materials it’d be a lot easier to get them confused than if two different patterns were used.
The drawing suggests that it was created in AutoCAD (note “DRINKS.DWG” in the corner). Searching on Usenet I found a post from 1997 mentioning a poster of mixed drinks that was used as part of a plotter demo at a tradeshow.

It has been several years, but I have used machines at a copy place that could copy and reproduce large plans like this. Is it possible for one of the folks that own a copy of this in the original size to generate a full size scan file of it?
I’d be happy to look into doing the job myself if you are in the Seattle area.
( we still have that big plotter at work, haven’t used it in years, but I bet I could print myself a copy if I only had the full sized file )
I called kinkos and they wanted $7.50 a sq/ft to do it. So between $37.50 and $45 to do the job. Any suggestions for a cheaper alternative?
@Mark – I think the best option is the free digital camera option.
@Nathan,
If you have access to a flatbed scanner, you could just do multiple scans. If you sent me those scans I could piece them together in PhotoShop, and then distribute the resulting whole image.
Let me know if you are interested.
I guess that should have been @Mark… oops. :)
Check a local Uni, if you’ve got one. Mine had a part of the library where students/faculty/anyone who could get in the building (which was unlocked in the day) could use the computers and pay cash to print. B&W line graphics on a plotter up to 60″ was like $2 a sq ft? Super cheap. Just be courteous and pay cash ;)
*cries*
I want a copy of the .dwg!
So sad… I may have to just redraw it myself… >:)
i’m redrawing in vector as we speak, but i need the colour information on the different items
can anyone maybe take a picture with his/her digital camera and email me? [email protected]
thx a lot
drawing as a vector ruins the “engineering” aspect of it.
@”engineer”: you think i’m a moron or what?
i think i did more technical drawings in my life than you have seen in yours…

i’m already 80% done, but i need the colour information – otherwise i can’t finish…

I’d like a copy of the vectorized version if you get the data you need, I wouldn’t mind printing this up as a poster. Could you send a copy to [email protected]? Much appreciated, if possible.
Hey, If you finish the vectorial form, could you please also send it to me. in DWG form. Thanks a lot. Would be very thankfull.
Nicely done! I’d be just as content with a black & white only version. Would it not be possible to do it all in B&W and add then add the colour at the end? I’m sure it would look cool in colour, but I kind of like the old-school feel of black and white only.
Looks amazing Flo! Keep it up! DWGs Please!
WOW. I’ve LOVE a copy when you’re done! [email protected]
Can I also get a finished copy please? [email protected]

Nice work on the DWG!
Great :)
I’d like to see the finished version, too.
Can you make something to make it look older and not so shiny? :) It will definately have a flavour.
Ivan.
For that you have the PDF version attached to the article. The resolution of it is enough to plot it on an A0. To make it “oldish” i have a suggestion use an older paper in the plotter and there you have. But right now we don’t have yet the DWG version.
I don’t know if the resolution is enough, but the small text is not readable on the PDF.
Superb.. I want one too. But preferrebly downloadable. I don’t mind if as eps, jpg or anything else.
Do i have to check back here to see if something has happend or will it be a new post?

This guy is right – has anyone actually checked the blueprints? It suggests serving a rusty nail with scotch and demerara rum!! This is without doubt incorrect. Rusty Nail should be scotch and drambuie.
Has anyone checked the others to make sure they are right?
Robert Hess, the author of “The Essential Bartenders Guide” is a friend of mine (www.drinkboy.com). He’s also a geeky engineer at Microsoft. I’m sure we could get him to “approve” of the receipes, an added bit of veracity that would make this even more useful today. -scott at vertigo dot com.

Someone definitely needs to correct some errors if they’re trying to remake this. It was clearly intended as a novelty item, but there’s no sense propagating its original inaccuracies.

Also, as an update, If someone handed me a Tom Collins with Vodka instead of Gin, I’d ask for a refund. That’s an obvious, glaring mistake that needs to be corrected if possible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Collins
Makes me wonder what other inaccuracies are on the original.
As long as we are going there……
The Margarita with 1oz of Triple Sec and 1oz of Tequila (and is that 1oz of lemon juice it calls for instead of lime?) would also warrant a refund. Double the tequila and half that Triple Sec, better yet replace with 1/2oz Cointreau, 1/2oz lime and shake until you arm is numb….
Triple Sec puts that coating on your tongue that can not be removed without paint stripper.
Not requesting a change I just wanted to share the proper method :)
@Blake
You are correct. The original has lemon juice in the margarita instead of lime. Yuck.
I guess it would be a huge PITA to go through and try to make sure every drink was “standard”, but there are some things that (hopefully) Flo will fix if he notices them and has the time. This is an engineering drawing after all…so several revisions might be required to get the bugs out ; ).
Hey, I found a slightly earlier posting of possibly the same file:
http://playing4keeps.wordpress.com/2009/11/24/it-turns-out-aerospace-engineers-arent-geeks/
I think the above version, someone tried to “clean up”, but I don’t know for sure.
It appears to be crooked in the same way as the one posted here.
From the top and bottom of the files here and there. Somebody likes their Canon Imagerunners. Does the line with width and height mean anything as to the relative resolution of these two?

Ah someone else also started drafting, nice.
I stopped at the hatch part, because I cant add hatches like the original has with the letters like the pf-pf-pf hatch for passion fruit.

Still have a lot to do, if I do find out how to do the hatches i’ll finish it, or I might try to use other standard hatches in stead.
If you’re done can you post a wmf file too? I just started drafting a year ago and im curious how it will match up ^^

Really-really GREAT job,
But there are two discrepancies comparing to original ;)
In Tom Collins there is Gin instead vodka.
In Rusty Nail there is Drambue instead of De Meraba Rum.
Maybe on the next revision we could add the Sourtoe

Retract one’s words. Thre was mistakes in the original ;)
So now cocktails recepies are correct.
Flo:
You mentioned that you had problems converting to dwg. Is the file in dxf format? Perhaps I can help.
Peter
Converting the pdf file to dwg/dxf results in having messed up hatches… at least thats my result when I’m converting the pdf.
Pingback: Engineer’s Guide to Drinks « Information Design at Penn
What is the source format that this drawing was done in?
I can understand if there is a translation issue from pdf to dwg/dxf
Peter
This is great, especially the vector rebuild! Thanks for that, and great job! It also looks like some mistakes have been fixed, such as the Tom Collins which should have Gin (fixed). There are a few others, and without stirring up disputes over minor recipe details, I think everyone would agree that both the Daiquiri and the Margarita should be made with LIME not LEMON juice. Beyond that you get into historical references and variations, such as the Singapore Sling, which should have Dom Benedictine (often overlooked).
Thanks again Flo.
I’ve converted to dwg and started hatching, not sure what colours to use though anyone have a photo of the original?
If anyone elso wants to continue the hatching that would be great as i’m outa free time for a week or 2, also how does one create the letter hatches?

Kathleen,
There are a few services out there like Zazzle.com where you can upload images for printing 8x10s and colossal posters as well. With Flo’s permission, I could put an appropriately sized (rasterized at a high enough resolution) version up on Zazzle and link to it here, but I think there are a few more revisions happening before this comment thread is finished!
I’m surprised no one has been able to track down the J. GOTTA (Joey?) that is listed as the last revision on 2/15/08 as redrawing in CAD. (https://flowingdata.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Engineers-Guide-to-Drinks11.pdf)
Seems recent enough? Regardless, three cheers to Flo for the great work!
