Comment to win a signed copy of Data Points

Data Points: Visualization that Means SomethingIt seems like ages since we ran one of these.

It’s hard to believe Data Points hit the shelves two months ago. (Thank you to everyone who got a copy!) It still feels brand new in my head. I kind of thought that time would slow down after I finished the book (and dissertation), but it seems to be moving even faster now.

Anyways, if you’d like a chance to win a copy of Data Points blemished by my signature, leave a comment below by Wednesday, June 5, 2013 11:59pm PST. Tell us what your favorite number is and why. One entry per person please. I’ll pick a winner at random via sample() in R. Good luck.

And of course, if you can’t wait, have never been lucky at cards, or want a blemish-free version of the book, you can get it at online and physical bookstores everywhere.

  • Favorite # = 17. Why? Ever since I’ve been little, I’ve thought of mint every time I hear or see the number 17… Don’t ask how that happens, it just does. The brain works in odd ways!

  • Neat :). My favourite number is 113, a nice prime number.

  • 42 (Douglas Adams fan)

  • My favorite number is 42 because it’s the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

  • Nice

  • Erik Englund June 4, 2013 at 4:59 am

    42 – for obvious reasons

  • Patrick Hart June 4, 2013 at 5:01 am

You can’t beat Pi. It’s just delicious.

    Who doesn’t love pi?

  • 10, for the decimal system of units

  • Annie Chas June 4, 2013 at 5:05 am

    7. It doesn’t seem to fit anywhere. I guess that’s why people have been fascinated by it and attributed mystic powers through history..

  • Chris Fauske June 4, 2013 at 5:06 am

One. It was the first number I learned.

  • 89 because when your slide deck has that many slides it makes you look smarter than you are.

  • My old jersey number: 4.

  • 42, it is the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything (or 7 which is my other favourite number)

  • 13, while it is unlucky for most, it has done some wonders for me.

  • Doug Cornelius June 4, 2013 at 5:11 am

Three is the magic number. And the first schoolhouse rock song.

  • My favorite number is zero. This number is so rogue that is has multiple cool slang names for itself: Zilch, Nada, Zip, Big fat nothing, etc. I just heard about your Data Points book, Nathan. Good luck with it!

  • My favorite number is 135 because that is what round(rnorm(1,100,50),0) told me.

  • 49 – that’s my house number.

  • My favorite number is Euler’s number, ~2.72. It’s at least as prolific as Pi, appearing in pretty much every field of math at some level, but it doesn’t get nearly the same recognition (ever celebrated e-day? ever heard of someone memorizing e to 100 digits?)

  • I would have to go with 42, for reasons that should be farily obvious. Seems I’m the first one to leave a comment! Too bad that won’t help my chances!

  • Favorite number is 7 for my favorite baseball player Greg Gagne.

  • 25 – my bday is 5/25, so I’ve always liked squares of primes.

19, Born the 19/9 living in a house with address 119.

  • 53 is my favorite number.

It is a prime (also a Eisenstein prime). The sum of the first 53 primes is 5830, which is divisible by 53.
53 can not be expressed as the sum of any integer and its base 10 digits, making 53 a self number.
53 is the smallest prime number that does not divide the order of any sporadic group.
    etc.

  • Favorite number: 26
It is perfectly positioned between a square number (25=5^2) and a cube number (27=3^3).

  • Mário Cordeiro June 4, 2013 at 5:48 am

1977, first because it is my birth year and second because 77 was a declared a A classic Vintage port wine year: https://www.ivdp.pt/pagina.asp?idioma=1&codPag=98&codSeccao=&

By the way, the book is great. Let’s see if it ages like the 1977 port wine and deserves to be declared a “vintage” book in the area of visualization in a couple of years.

  • Anne-Laure June 4, 2013 at 6:04 am

I like 13 because of a family story… My great-grandmother used to tell me that when she was little they began putting numbers on the house in her street and nobody wanted the number 13. Her mother volunteered. For 90 years (except for the war) it was a very happy house.

  • My favorite number is 37, but eleventy billion is a close second. There’s something inherently funny about 37.

  • I love 11 because it looks so nice on a 7 segment display and 11:11 is my wishing time.

  • 583,089
… because that’s the number R gave when I asked for a random number between 0 and 1 million. However, when I went back to check my work, R gave me an entirely different number. I think R is broken. Ha!

  • 10 – It’s a family tradition that every sports jersey worn in competition by anyone in my family (aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, etc.) is some combination of numbers (73,64,82,19,etc.) that add up to 10.

  • Joao Beno June 4, 2013 at 6:22 am

13, Because a lot of people seems to dislike it…

  • Favorite number is 8. Has been so from a young age and my best explanation is that I like the aesthetic symmetry when placed on uniforms in football and basketball. A disproportionate number of my favorite athletes wore that number. Loved your previous book Nathan and would of course love to win a copy of the new one.

  • Seven (7) – it’s a divine number, repeated over 250 times in scripture.

  • 6 because it is Bert’s favorite number and it’s the first perfect number. I actually like Ernie better, but I couldn’t remember Ernie’s favorite number (8,243,721) as he said it too fast when I saw the segment on Sesame Street. It took me years to finally track it down.

  • 6 has been my favorite number since I was a kid and my dad told me about perfect numbers.

  • 1 = indivisible

    Favorite Number: 17
I’ve always like the look of it. It was also my Dad’s baseball number, my wife’s high school volleyball number, her dad’s football number. I’m just continuing the tradition I guess.

  • 2. It’s better than 1.

  • Greg Sjaardema June 4, 2013 at 9:26 am

  • HealthStatsDude June 4, 2013 at 9:27 am

Never been lucky at cards (too many tells) but I’ll give this drawing a shot anyway!

18–Payton Manning’s jersey number. Yeah, not very geeky (looking at you, susan silver!), but what can I say–I’ve been a Broncos fan since I was a wee lad in the 1970s.

Zero’s close second, though, mostly cause of Seife’s book on the subject. And, as you know very well, books are POWERFUL! (So keep ’em coming, Nathan!)

  • 42 because I am a nerd and unoriginal. :P

  • Mano Senaratne June 4, 2013 at 9:36 am

My favorite number is 13; despite the myths, I have found this number to be lucky for me. After all my name has 13 letters :-)

  • 137 – For some years, physicists thought that the ‘fine structure constant’, a dimensionless ratio expressing the strength of electromagnetic interaction, was exactly the reciprocal of 137; this imbued the number with near-mythic significance, and a entire book was written about the magical properties of this special number. With further research, the ratio was determined to close to, but not exactly 1/137, so the number lost some of its sheen. A metaphor for so much of life.

  • My favorite number is googleplex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googolplex). A google just isn’t large enough.

A close second is the number one, because one is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do.

  • Until recently I would have said 42, but my new wife and I chose a series of prime numbers for our wedding: 2/23/13. So recently 23 has come to the fore as the number I favor.

  • 0. For nothing (pun intended)

  • 8, it’s fashionable i.e. Q: ” What did the zero say to the eight? ” A: ” Nice belt. “

  • Paul Wiegand June 4, 2013 at 9:46 am

As a computer scientist, I have to be prosaic and suggest that the number 2 is the best. It is the only even numbered prime, also a power of two, and the smallest base in which numeric information can be encoded. Spelled in English, it also has two homonyms (to and too). When displayed on your hand in the traditional way, it also doubles for the symbol for peace and can be held over people’s heads to make them look silly in photographs. Clearly there are only two categories of numbers: 2 and everything else.

  • Alessandro Gagliardi June 4, 2013 at 9:49 am

I’m not sure if it counts as a number, but my favorite numerical expression is 0/0 because 0 over anything is 0, but anything over itself is 1, and anything over 0 is infinity (or undefined, depending on your religion). It’s like a zen koan expressed in a number.

  • e . . . its just so natural

  • It’s silly, but I’m going with 45,954 – my pubescent, middle school self was very excited when it realized the product of 69 and 666 is a palindrome. The irreverent, immature, and oh-so-nerdy nostalgia that number elicits for me captures the essence of those years perfectly.

  • I’d love to win another copy so I can finish reading it. So far, 6 of my collegues have “borrowed” mine before returning it saying they have purchased thier own copy. Collegues #6 is a slow reader….

  • 24. It just hits a great balance between a high number of factors, making it easy to do arithmetic in modulo, with its relatively low numerical value. The sum of its factors is 57, so the ratio to itself is almost 2.4!

  • Gwyndolyn June 4, 2013 at 9:56 am

My favorite # is 2. First is the worst, second is the best, third is the one with the hairy chest.

  • It’s already been picked, but 24 for the same reason.

  • Gosh, I totally messed that one up! I forgot 3! The sum of 24’s factors is 60, so the ratio is 2.5. Even better!

  • 9 because it has absolute symmetry by 3.

  • 42. For life, the universe, and everything.

  • 2 is my favorite!

  • My favorite number is 7 – I don’t know why, it’s just what’s stuck with me since I was a kid.

  • 17. It’s prime, part of a prime pair (w/19). And it was a lovely age, too. :)

  • 27. for me, no pair of numerals looks as pretty set non-lining.

  • 121…because it’s 11×11 and builds to all of the other 11 multiples in its cool way. (okay…probably *really* 42, but that would just look too much like following the crowd).

  • Favorite number is 3. Everything can be measured with the number 3.

  • 6 is my new favorite number since that is the month that will play host to the birthdate of my expectant little one. :)

  • 3 – because Schoolhouse Rock says 3 is a magic number.

  • 86400, the number of seconds in a day. Pops up all the time in hydrology and hydrogeology (as well as many other disciplines, I presume).

  • My favorite number is 9 because I’m Life Path Number 9. I know, it’s pretty naive. ;)

  • My favorite number is .618

I use the golden ratio at work everyday!

  • 10 – the best number that makes measurements easy!

  • 3,141592653589793 because it’s magic

  • i like 5; always have. It’s so useful “let’s take 5.” “High five” etc.

  • e, but not for any rational reason.

  • 16384 – The first power of two that I have to calculate–too many syllables to memorize.

  • A googol. (I remember now being able to find google.com because I misunderstood a friend in school.)

  • Well, since 42 is already taken… how about 2.7182818284590452353602874713526624977572470936999595…

  • 525,600 — number of minutes in a year, part of the lyrics from one of the songs from Rent

  • Jared G. West June 4, 2013 at 11:27 am

I like Moser’s Number – for no other reason than I looked it up and no one has claimed it as their favorite number yet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moser%27s_number#Moser.27s_number

  • 8, because it seems to coincidentally pop up in several significant dates in my life.

  • I like 1729, because I still remember the story I read about Ramanujan, upon hearing that his friend Hardy had ridden in a taxi with that number said, “it is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways.” I never cease to be amazed by a mind that could work like that.

  • 2. I don’t remember how I started liking it but it’s been my favorite since I was a child.

  • 21, because that’s how old I am. In hexadecimal.

  • 27 is a good number. Hard to pick just one favorite with so many good choices.

  • 0. It’s modern as far as numbers go, is easy to multiply yet hard to divide, and doesn’t take up much space.

  • I learned a lot from the first book. Looking forward to this one!

  • 7. No idea why, but it works for me!

  • 6 – I was number 6 at my elementary theater show :)

  • 33 just because

  • Either 42 for obvious reasons or e^pi i + 1 since it’s the average of all numbers in the universe.

  • Fibonacci sequence: 11235813

  • 13. I was born on the 13th, and always liked the fact that a lot of people think it is unlucky.

  • Neil Bowers June 4, 2013 at 12:31 pm

87110: my zip code from a very enjoyable 3.5 years spent living in Albuquerque.

  • 1024 – that’s 1 followed by 10 zeroes

  • One, because it means the same in any base.

  • fav number: e
    why?: it’s everywhere!

  • 17, i’ve just always liked it. it used to be 7 but the 1 just kind of slipped in front of it i guess. It is also the least random number.

  • My fav number is pi: 3.14159…especially on pi day (3/14/YYYY) – and pi day in ’15 should be extra special!!!

  • 2, you and somebody else :)

  • Drew Daniel June 4, 2013 at 1:26 pm

3 – because my dad use to take me to the horse tracks as a kid and we would always put a WPS on the 3.

  • 13 just because all good things happen to me either on 4th (1+3) or the 13th.

  • Shawn Freeman June 4, 2013 at 1:32 pm

Well, 42 is my first choice, for obvious reasons. Since that is over-represented here, I will take my second choice of 25.

Why? Because I spent two years being “25 years old”. Strangely (or not), I often do not remember my age off hand. I have to calculate it from my birthday. Sometimes, when under the pressure of a doctor checking that you don’t have some mental damage, the calculation fails (or failed in this case). The rest is history.

    ;-)

  • My favorite is 9, because for me, it is shaped like the word “dream” appears in my head. Seems like a particular kind of synesthesia somehow. But the number just feels nice, warm and cozy.

  • Nick McClure June 4, 2013 at 1:44 pm

22/7 = 3.142857. An easy real world approximation to Pi.

  • I am a Pi day boy, so it is Pi of course :)

  • 7 because it means perfection! :)

  • 8,589,869,056. It is the 6th perfect number. Or, it is the first perfect perfect number.

  • 37

    Many interesting things… http://primes.utm.edu/curios/page.php/37.html
    All three-digit repdigit numbers are divisible by 37 (e.g., 111, 222, 333, …)
    pi(37) = 12, pi(73) = 21.

  • 11. It’s lucky.

  • Peter McMenamin June 4, 2013 at 2:45 pm

My favorite is 789, because we all know why 6 is afraid of 7.

  • Joseph Brew June 4, 2013 at 2:51 pm

  • Chris Hogg, VP of Data Sciences at Practice Fusion, if another one of my data-nerd heroes.

  • 203 – my birthday falls on the 23rd of March, and 203 was my high school locker number!

  • Hard to choose between 1 and 0. Pi and e are cool to, but you gotta love 1 for its completeness. 0 is for the cynics! ;-)

  • 42 is the answer.

  • 14.

    – It’s 7×2. My birthday is on the 21st, which is 7×3 (July 21). July is the 7th month of the year. Halfway between 7 and 21 is 14. 7 is a cool number, which makes all of that cool.

  • My favourite number is 33 and always has been. It has a certain equilibrium to it. My brother’s favourite number is 32 and we always had long discussions about which number occurs more. 32 being 2 to the 5th, it appears often in relation to computers (e.g. when 32MB RAM was a big deal), while 33 is a third of a 100 and appears on soda cans and beer bottles (33cl). Of course, once those two numbers are on your mind, you start seeing them everywhere!

  • Has anyone picked 216 yet?

That’s a good one. Untouchable. Sum of a twin prime. The smallest cube that’s the sum of three other cubes. And it’s apparently a “Friedman” number, whatever the heck that is.

But it’s best-known to me (and my fellow web old-timers) as the number of colors in the “web-safe” color palette.

And it just has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

  • 73 – its a star number so you can make a six pointed star from 73 dots. It is also an emirp number, a pallindrome when converted to binary 1001001. Amazingly the binary consists of seven digits and three 1’s – nice. It also describes something rare and blue in chemistry – it is the atomic number of Tantalum. Plenty of attachment to the visual world in the number 73, so let’s go for that.

  • i. Blew my mind when I found out the “imaginary numbers” Hobbes told Calvin he needed to use for his 1st grade homework problem of 9 + 4 was a real thing. Tigers are good at mass (and/or they’re jerks.)

    o derivative of e^x = e^x
