Doogie Horner from Comic vs. Audience created the above flow chart for heavy metal band names. So in case you’re in search of name for your heavy metal band, start at the skull and work your way out. Just for ideas though. Don’t be a biter. For example: Death -> Pleas for Help -> Adolescent Poetry -> System of a Down. Regular FlowingData readers might also recall Doogie’s similar flow charts for comedy and what to say during sex.
[Thanks, Jess]
As a heavy metal fan + data vis fan, this is absolutely awesome :) It may go on my cube wall.
dude! you just made my day… + what angel said
ha, happy to help
Hilarious. Petitioning to add “Staind” to the “Pointless Misspellings” area…
That is quite possibly the coolest thing I have seen in a while — shouldn’t Dethklok be added to the flowchart?
But shouldn’t Mastodon be a real extinct animal?
Fantastic job! Really excelellent work.
It really highlights how banal and predictable a lot of Metal bands are in picking their names.
My favourite Heavy Metal band of all time is Jameson Raid – and I’m really pleased to see their name wouldn’t fit into this chart :-)
(no “British Military History of the 19th Centuary” section!)
Nice one, I’m going to print this off. I hope you’ll do an extended version with a lot more bands in it – Don’t forget the European Celtic mythology connection ;-)
Pantera was not a foreign band. Just sayin.’
