How a Giant Shark Took Down an Airplane
This graphic from designer Stephen Taubman is entertaining in so many ways. It is based on the amazing story of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, one of the greatest movies ever made. I've never seen it, but after you watch the clip below, you'll be running to find a copy.
Don't even try to convince me that couldn't happen. That could happen. I don't think I can fly ever again, at least not ones that fly over water.

The author clearly forgot to take into account that Mega Shark still propels himself once out of the water by fluttering his caudal fin, thus reducing the need of initial speed by π radians.

I havent flown since 1992 and am 100% happy of my decision not to.

this was actually my first time hearing about it. has mega shark and giant octopus been showing up elsewhere?
no actually, It is a fairly old movie (2004) my brother is a huge sci-fi nerd and he was watching this movie last year around christmas time, this scence was on whe i walked in
and on top of it all there is no reason in hell that a shark would want to take down a plane

@Nathan – Mega Shark was all over the news last year – I mean, c’mon, it stars Debbie Gobson and Lorenzo Lamas ;) At the end of the year, it was ranked above Avatar in the 10 most-viewed trailers of 2009, and was the most downloaded trailer of the year as well.
Anyway, it’s gloriously ridiculous, and if you want to watch it, I think it’s now streaming on NetFlix and such.,

Hmmm. The aircraft sharky chomps is a 744, but the one that impacts the water is a 76, or similar….and with its nosegear down.

That give us the shark’s motive to attack. He doesn’t like the 744 and during the fall he reassembled it into his favorite model.

But what I don’t get is how Megashark could see the jet plane coming so fast, from such a distance, and time her mightly leap so perfectly as to snatch the plane with a microsecond of a window. Is it the Megashark’s keen sense of smell? Electrical currents picked up in her lateral line? Eyesight?
sharks hunt by sensing electrical activity around them, thus knowing exactly where things are without needing to see them. Ever heard of a place called the bermuda triangle? Airplanes being hit by”missiles”? Authorities are trying to keep megashark a secret, they won’t for much longer.
Because Shark is awesome!

The size estimate is way off. The shark has to be at least 400 feet long, given that the 747 is about 250 feet long.

why does this exist?
What makes the author believes that the Shark can stay in it’s trajectory once air born? Don’t tell me that “mega-shark” can see wind direction and velocity from under the water.
The shark would also have to be able to see an object 2000m in the air, account for it’s speed, and the refraction of the light….that is the Einstein of sharks

I hadn’t heard of this movie. There is no way the shark in that clip is 40 feet long, unless that’s a Lilliputian Air flight.

The movie actually shows the shark at varying sizes, GREATLY varying sizes. In this scene it is about twice the size of a plane.. In another scene it is about a quarter of the length of the Golden Gate bridge, and can fit its entire mouth around it. That means that in the bridge scene, the shark would actually be about 300 metres long, whereas in this scene it is about 100 metres long (very roughly, but you get the point).
While I believe mega shark can jump that high, its fin eye coordination astounds me.

Actually, I think this graphic severely underestimates the considerable skill of Megashark. Cruising altitude of a 747 is approximately 10,000 meters. At that altitude, my back of the envelope calculations show a necessary launch velocity of approximately 1600 km/hr – which is faster then an F-16. Now that’s one talented shark…
