Hilarious as always, Christoph Niemann illustrates in his graphical New York Times op-ed how getting a good night’s sleep is easier said than done, especially when you have a small bladder, mosquitoes that won’t go away, and a kid with nightmares. Enjoy.
I have yet to figure out the spooner’s dilemma:
[Thanks, Justin]
The spooning graphic reminds me of Jason Lee’s quote in Mallrats, or perhaps it was Chasing Amy, on the subject of spooning. Sadly I can’t dig up the exact quote, but the jist is that love means always putting your arm above your head so it doesn’t get in the other person’s way.
From IMDB:
Brodie: You know how when someone lays with their back to you, and you lay behind them really close and you throw one arm over them?
T.S. Quint: It’s called spooning.
Brodie: Yeah, but you gotta put the other arm somewhere. You can either lay on it or shove it between your bodies. The only other option is to stretch it above your head. But sometimes my arm pops out of socket when I’m sleeping like that. So I was constantly searching for someplace to keep my arm while still laying close to her.
Gwen: And?
Brodie: What do you mean, ‘and’? That’s like a metaphor for our whole relationship. I’m all out. I’ll meet you at the food court.
Saleslady at Lingerie Store: [crying] I know exactly how he feels. Excuse me.
Strange, I couldn’t find it when I looked there. It just goes to show you that the ease with which you find something is inversely proportional to your desire to find it.
The spooner is suffering from awkward arm!
It’s not hard: one arm goes over, one arm goes in the gap between neck and bed/pillow. Perfectly comfortable for both involved.
my arm usually goes numb
my guy does that for me :*) hmmm! <3
i just shove it between us when i'm on the outside… i think i'm developing a little nerve damage :-P
There is a solution to this problem @ http://www.xkcd.com/335/
see http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=awkward%20arm for a helpful definition of this all-too common and frustrating phenomenon and a special mattress that’s designed to alleviate the issue here: http://www.complex.com/blogs/2008/01/04/love-mattress-reduces-spooning-induced-arm-fatigue/.
in the end, i’m not going to buy a special mattress, and i sleep too warm to spoon anyway.
