  My thanks are in multiple parts and a bit off the beaten path here.

  From 2002-2006 my wife and I lived and worked in Afghanistan. One of the projects we helped to launch was Pajhwok Afghan News, the country’s largest independent news agency. When Pajhwok first launched to provide news, written by a team of professionally trained Afghan journalists from an Afghan perspective, about the country’s Constitutional Loya Jirga and the first Presidential Elections in 2004, no one knew if they would last. Years later, Pajhwok accepted the 2008 International Press Freedom Award, and this year defied the government’s reporting ban to provide unmatched coverage of this year’s troubled elections.

  So, with that in mind:

  1. I am thankful to the tireless staff of Pajhwok for reporting the news in spite of violence, death threats, and the occasional killing of their journalists, so that we can have a clear view of events on the ground;
  2. I am thankful that during the elections, Pajhwok finally started to get the recognition of international agencies to match the great reputation inside the country that they have earned; and
  3. I am especially thankful to the coalition and ISAF troops and their efforts to provide Afghans the freedom to rebuild their own war-torn country … especially those, in this most deadly year, who have paid the ultimate price doing what we all sent them there to do.
