We saw this handy dandy coffee guide by Plaid Creative a while back. Oh so clean. Oh so informative. The world of fancy pants coffee drinks can be confusing, but it doesn’t have to be with this poster on your wall to guide you through the most difficult challenge in life: ordering coffee.
With some updates and corrections to the original, The Perfect Pour is now in poster form.

Au lait!
Cold-brew coffee, little ice lots of cream. Oh my yes.
Lately, my favorite is the Americano — double shot. For the longest time I was sticking with dark roast drip coffee, but the Americano became the drink of choice for a couple reasons: It packs a punch, and (more importantly) it’s a safer order in an unfamiliar coffee shop (face it, drip coffee can be really bad at some places, but espresso drinks are harder to screw up).
Long black, in a cafe somewhere on the West Coast of New Zealand, South Island. MMmmmm
Latte with 2 espresso shots
Definitely favorite is a good cup of black coffee or espresso. If it’s not good coffee, I’ll add cream and sugar to make it tolerable. Definitely think this poster helps my non coffee knowledgeable friends understand coffee.
A good cafe mocha can always make a day better.
For my favorite coffee drink, I have to go classic – a steaming hot flavored cappuccino any day of the week!
“No one can understand the truth until he drinks of coffee’s frothy goodness,” says Sheik Abd-al-Kadir and I’m with him on that.
Nothing beats a straight shot of espresso.
When feeling very unlucky or tired, I enjoy a Vietnamese iced coffee. Actually, I’d like one now please.
I usually make an espresso or an americano, because I drink a lot of coffee and I’m too lazy for all the frou frou. But maybe the poster would inspire me to branch out a bit more…
the basic black
keep it pure keep it caffeinated
Hot Caramel Machiatto.. :D
Black coffee but I am moving to Americano straight.
A cortado (aka cortadito), which is espresso and steamed (not foamed) milk in a roughly 1:2 ratio, like a really strong flat white. I also like a good strong Americano with sugar.
Tall iced vanilla Americano :-)
Great poster!
Favorite? Espresso done right.
Normal order? Soy latte!
Americano – the espresso beans at most shops tend to be a little nicer than the house ground.
Flat whites from the Australian owned coffee shop down the street from my apartment.
I must say, I am a traditionalist. I drink organic, shade-grown, fair trade South American coffee, preferably Mexican. Black.
But, occasionally I indulge in a full-fat cappuccino! :)
I feel it simply tastes better if it was greedily harvested from the lands of impoverished third-world farmers for minimum pay, but, to each his own.
The Basic black, the best of the best
But Irish Coffee is good too :)
Dark roasted filter coffee with a cig.
One poster to Finland, ayeh?
Espresso off my stove mixed with warm milk – so cafe au lait.
With cream and sugar.. The foo foo drinks are good too. But they are a treat, not everyday coffee.
Basic Black. That way I always get it exactly as I like it.
“BUT JERRY, what about me café latte!!!!”
my* oops.
Nothing beats Cappuccino!
Ice Coffee – Croatia style.
Lately, iced coffee, but black coffee brewed in a French press on a porch overlooking a quiet side street in a busy city — that’s the best.
Triple shot espresso half and half cream and sugar iced.
I Like verry much latte vanilla …also the ice coffe
:D
On a naughty day – A hot delicious double-shot mocha with plenty of whipped cream!
On a good day – A small Americano with a little bit of milk, and a sprinkle of sugar
I am from Puerto Rico, where the espresso is amazing, but I love ordering a “cortadito,” which means it is “cut” with a little milk. Best way to start the day.
I’m too jittery to read this thing. It’s coming through all blurry.
double macchiato, no doubt.
Expresso … hmmm
Americano, black. Hot in the winter, iced in the summer.
double espresso –> KAPOW!
I’m a big, big fan of the macchiato. Yummy!.
Double Espresso most times. Irish Coffee as a treat.
Love this!
Irish is my coffee drink at night.
Latte with skim milk, please.
Iced Grande Nonfat No-whip 2 pump White Mocha @ Starbucks Coffee Co.
I ♥ coffee
Best on-the-go: munch straight coffee beans.
Black and strong, with lots of sugar!
Basic Black.
Doppio, no sugar.
Scotch Coffee*:
2 parts Scotch
.
*Taken best when drank as early in the day as possible.
The Grey Capp?!
An overnight cold brew, with vanilla soy and a touch of liquid sugar.
I like a plain medium roast coffee. A great product simply prepared is the best way to get to the essence. Like graphics extra stuff just obscures.
Being a coffee addict, I thoroughly enjoyed this chart.
What I’m drinking now isn’t on there: 3/4 coffee, 1/4 milk, 1 packet of sucralose.
;)
Flat white. I love that you can find Australian and Kiwi baristas anywhere you go in the world.
What about a cup of Turkish Coffee?
Mocha. (Unless I can get away with an Irish Coffee.)
It depends on my mood and which coffee shop is closest.
For all occasions, I go with an Americano.
But there is a coffee shop around the corner from my friends house that makes the best mochas. So I always have one of them when I’m around that area. Mocha, with soy milk please!
And then there is this other coffee shop that is home to some fantastic baristas. They have almond milk. If I’m in that area and I want a treat, I get an Almond Milk Late.
double espresso + vanilla soy (when I’m sleeping every 30 min at work…)
OR
chai latte, no additional sugar added, with skim milk, HOT
Just coffee with cream. Stumptown, of course.
Latte in the morning. Double Espresso in some breaks during the day.
Quad ice latte with skim – zoom, zoom…
irish coffee…possible made with Midleton…the perfect irish single malt
and my roommate… who is too lazy to pick… would always go for a Starbucks Venti Latte (whole milk is a must) + 1/4 pack sweet-n-lo
I like it black, although that might just be out of laziness.
espresso FTW !
Latte with whole milk and a drizzle of caramel if I’m sitting down at a coffeehouse with someone, but black (in quantity) when I need to stay conscious through lab meetings.
Triple espresso w/hazelnut, inhaled as soon as it cools enough not to scorch your taste buds off.
Doppio.
I like it strong and black… just like my cell phone.
Since it’s still summertime, gotta go with a delicious Iced Toddy … my favorite changes with the seasons
Iced latte
macchiato with whole milk. delish and oh so cute!
My favorite coffee is anything I roast myself.
But the absolute best cup I’ve ever had was on Central Java, Indonesia at the Losari Coffee Plantation.
Double espresso!
EXTRA, EXTRA HOT
Chai latte. Love the poster – I used to barista so it’s close to my heart!
Americano — double shot.
Triple-shot large caramel latte.
A coffee Cthulhu: 1/2 dark roast coffee, 1/2 buttermilk, add dash of dark chocolate. Top with squid, rant about the End of Days.
Also, here’s the secret recipe for the Gelato Mockiato:
Serve six cold Jello coffee cubes and shaved ice in a bowl, topped with cocoa powder. Serve with straw. Taunt customer.
One more and I’ll stop:
Soy Camel Latte:
2/3 light roast coffee, filtered through a mohair jacket (from a dromedary camel, of course)*
Top with 1/3rd heavy cream. Layer soy sauce on top.
Add “Joe Cool” brand cigarette as stir stick.
*note: the recipe can easily be made a double by substituting a bactrian camel for a dromedary
Cafe mocha — though decaf., unfortunately.
My favorite is an orange iced mocha. I use a vegetable peeler to peel big pieces of orange peel into the drink (or you can use a drop or two of orange oil). Doesn’t sound that great, but it is unbelievably delicious.
I’m not a huge coffee drinker but working in an office where the workday starts at 7:30 turned it into a necessity … so cheap office coffee with as little sugar/cream as possible
Nice poster! I’d like a half white, please.
basic black
I love my hazelnut lattes, but only when they don’t make them too sweet. Rather intrigued by some others mentioned here – orange mocha? :)
“Black coffee, no sugar, no cream. That’s the kind of girl I need down with my team.” – Heavy D
Almond latte for me!
shot in the dark with lots of brown sugar
Though it didn’t make it on to the poster, a piccolo is my favourite coffee drink. Best served with a huge cooked breakfast where a flat white would take up precious space otherwise reserved for hash browns.
I like a double latte, but a little on the short side.
Flat White, please! :)
Coffee flavored coffee is my preference.
Iced Vietnamese coffee (strong French Roast coffee w/ sweetened condensed milk)
A mocha is my daily beverage of choice during the school year.
Turkish coffee
fell in love with the flat white and the affogato while in Australia the other week.
It has to be iced espresso :)
Cold-brewed over ice!
favourite coffee drink? coffee. pure. simple. hot. now.
Espresso macchiato, Italian-style.
Coffee is one of the few luxuries I consider worthy. ; )
Can never turn down an irish coffee on a cold/brisk morning.
Turkish, won’t drink anything less.
I’m amazed the lengths that coffee places will go to please the arcane tastes of hipsters, yet those same places sell powdered chai.
Flat white + newspaper on a Sunday morning in a Ponsonby cafe, Auckland
I actually really enjoy French pressed coffee, but… On the poster, my favorite is the Yuanyang, Hong Kong style of course.
A wonderfully made Flat White will do the job
I love a nice cafe mocha made with my Aeropress!
Cold brew coffee with steamed 2% milk and raw sugar
Iced Skinny Sugar-Free-Vanilla [if avail] Latte

As long as it’s civet, I’m good.
Double espresso! I’m awake now.
Irish coffee with lots of whipped cream…
It’s gotta be an Irish!
double short cubano with steamed vanilla soy milk
I would have said latte with an extra shot, but your poster tells me that I should also try a Galao!
Oh, I’m moving to a new apartment next month and this + my wall = awesome. My favorite coffee is the kind that tastes like dessert… I know I know, sorry purists! Top pick is a caramel macchiato. Mmm.
Double macchiato, dry cappuccino, or black drip.
Hazelnut latte!
The humble Latte. No flavor. More foam the better.
If the beans are a blend I’ll have a dry cappuccino, but if it’s single origin I’ll have shot of espresso.
The Luscious Lover – White Mocha (Regular Milk) with a dash of Nutmeg
Large Irish Coffee, decaf, 6 sugars, lite, chai milk, steamed, served in a tall vessel drank with Mars Bar
Ordering anything fancy before 7am is nigh impossible for me.
To this end, given me the biggest coffee that you have with milk and honey!
Irish, all the way. Anytime you can incorporate booze I’m in!
At Starbucks my favorite drink also has the most redundancies in the name: iced tall, half sweet, light ice, iced coffee with milk. That’s “ice” x 3!
Americano! No Milk, no sugar, no everything!
ice americano! black!
No question. Basic black. I’ve hardly ever ordered anything but.
I drink Americano. it’s like regular coffee but better.
Worth a shot
Yay, I’m in. And… I’ll have English breakfast tea with milk, please.
Columbian Coffee with Cream and M&Ms. Delicious :)
THE EISKAFFEE – but only because of the funny mixture of languages in the name :-)
Ice latte with nonfat vanilla. yum!
Kopi Luwak – best of the best. you never drank a coffee like this!
Depth Charge!
Toss up: Dark Mocha and Black.
If I were to choose one off the poster, it would be a macchiato, for sure. Simple and yummy. Or an espresso. Rub a bit of lemon on the rim and you’re good to go.
If I want to get all fancy-pants Starbucks, then it would be a triple tall, half-sweet soy, no whip, no foam, extra hot white chocolate mocha. Is it eclectic? Yes. Difficult to say? For others, yes. Do I particularly care? Not in the slightest, lol! ^^
Iced Americano!
Cappuccino. No extras.
a double cortado from the shop around the corner : -9
It would be the basic black. But not just any basic black. The preferred cup would be brewed from Just Coffee’s Revolution Roast or Maya Super Dark.
A basic black, or something else similarly not fancy-pants.
Breve.
Aero-pressed Americano, of course.
Make mine just a cup of black coffee. No extras.
Quad Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte, please!
Mmmm, I’m craving that Americano right now…
half-caf, room for milk
it’s missing HALF COFFEE, HALF WHOLE MILK (my winter fare).
my summer fare is ICED AMERICANO. yummmmmmm! i stop 1/2 way to work (on my bike) and gun a large one of these bad boys.
i love this poster!
Decaf vanilla latte, during class break.
Black is the new Black.
Cafe Latte, no question.
The Chelsea coffee from Noah’s bagel
The Macchiato all the way!
There’s nothing like a Caffe Latte on a rainy day :)
My mean, horrible Dr. doesn’t want me to have coffee, so once a month I sneak a double-shot 12 oz. soy latte, making sure that my favorite barrista is working so I can get my perfect heart on top of the light layer of foam. Nirvana.
It’s called “The JFK:” Three shots of espresso.
Latte @ Rocket Donuts in Bellingham WA. Yes, I know this sound ‘double bad’ but it’s also double good :)
one cream, one sugar. stirred clock-wise.
A bricklayer! What is a bricklayer, you ask? No idea! But I like to order it at bars and see what the bartender comes back with. They never admit to not knowing.
A mochachino.
A cup of Irish coffee, hold the coffee (okay, maybe a splash of it).
Medium strength coffee with a shot of hazelnut coffee.
eerr…hazelnut syrup. Had too much coffee!
I would like a nice cold Greek Frape now.
WANT!
I like to brew my own coffee in a french press using beans from La Golondrina, Popayan, and for that extra something, a whisper of orange essential oil and Madagascar double strength bourbon vanilla extract.
An afternoon Flat White from Flat White’s on Berwick St. in London – creamy smooth, soothes the soul and refreshes the mind.
A macchiato has been my caffeine drink of choice for a long time, however it’s not 1 part espresso to 1 part foamed milk, more like a dollop… never with anything else.
My credentials: living in Rome for 10 years.
1st place: Armenian
aka Turkish
aka Greek
aka Persian
black as hell, strong as death and sweet as love
2nd place: Dirty Chai
Mocha. Simple, elegant, and a little sweet.
A good cup of black coffee with a little bit of milk to start the day. A cafe mocha, probably iced, if a caffeine boost in the afternoon is necessary.
Ethiopian! And an occasional frozen mocha, of course…
Doppio Espresso. On the weekend add a splash of cream.
Macchiato, indeed.
Ahh, coffee porn.
Oooo, the Cafe Mocha! Chocolate ftw :)
cafe au lait – new orleans style with chicory
Good coffee, good visual. The best wake up :)
Malaysian’s own Ipoh White Coffee accompanied by twin slices of toasted buttered bread. Simple and unpretentious indulgence. Best enjoyed over a hot and busy day.
My buddy is a coffe fanatic. He’d LOVE this poster. In fact- I’ll give it to him when I win it. (Positive thinking.)
I’ll take a well-made Basic Black or else a Flat White with soy. mmmm coffee
I hate coffee. But, I love this poster.
Iced americano with room or a hot cafe au lait! Yummy!
This is boring but there’s nothing like a really good quality black coffee. Love the yinyang too – very unique taste!
Macchiato
I’ll take an Irish, but my friend for whom I want to win this as a gift loves cappucino, to what is certainly an unhealthy degree.
I like the simple, yet delicious, capuccino!
I like iced cafe au lait with lots of sugar.
my favorite is Turkish Coffee…
Hazelnut white mocha, please!
large black coffee.
The only real coffee is black short (one shot) espresso…by the way I’m Italian :)
The basic black… what else ?
I like a Cafe Melange with a small glass of water on the side for afterwards, optional sugar cube, depending on my mood :)
my try!
with milk
espresso with lots of steamed milk – for the weak :)
My personal choice would be a Caffè Macchiato!
THE FLAT MILK ___also known as LATTE MACCHIATO
Hmmm. Probably Ethiopian coffee in a little shop in Addis Ababa.
ice coffee does it everytime – except during winter – well maybe — simple cappuccino does it — the grande – big as you can get — later days
There can be no better way to catch up with flowingdata.com than to be sat in the garden on a lazy Sunday morning with a steaming cafetiere of fresh Columbian coffee.
Espresso.
Starbucks Iced Dopeo
Well. If the coffee bean is pure/good enough, you can’t go wrong with the russian cocaine: (Like a tequila-shot – but not disgusting) Kahlua-shot, a nip of freshly ground coffee-powder, and a slice of lemon.
A so-called (well, here in Italy at least) “coffee corrected with Sambuca”: roughly 3/5 espresso coffee and 2/5 Sambuca, no sugar (the Sambuca is already sweet enough), served in a usual espresso demi-tasse.
The first coffee of the morning.
It’s that 15 minutes where 3-4 peeps gather together around the coffee machines to froth milk for cappuccinos, exchange gossip, and generally wait for the mind to catch up with the body.
long black. definitely long black.
Coffee + Mint Schnapps (okay, not often, sort of interferes with work)
I don’t even drink coffee, that’s why I’m always lost in Starbucks, but I saw a chart like this one in China and I thought that would even more useful than the New York underground map (especially since I live in Miami) !
Do you have a foldable version? ;o)
Quad Venti Soy Caramel Macchiato
the Americano double shot is the best for me.
According to your.flowingdata, I like Americano’s and iced Americano’s the most (averaging about 16 oz/day). This is followed by The Basic Black (8 oz/day). Both drop during the weekend, though, as I have more of my favorite, The Carajillo, and the occasional Irish Coffee.
Also, my wife is a Colombian spelling vigilante–she’s actually made coffee shops correct their spelling on the menu. I’ve been deputized, so…
I noticed two folk talked about “Columbian” coffee, and neither spelled it correctly. The country is spelled with an “O”, while everything in the USA is spelled with a “U”. The coffee, of course, is from the country, so is “Colombian”.
double espresso with a shot or grappa on the side
Long macchiato with hazelnut syrup.
iced americano!
The Australian Flat White. Recently discovered it and now I can’t get enough!
My favorite is just a simple cafe au lait.
Extra bold! Black!
or if I’m feeling girly, I’ll swing by s-bucks for a caramel frap!
I wonder how many of these are known by your average barista…
Grande hazelnut split shot latte, cold milk, no ice.
Iced coffee on a hot summer day with cream and sugar.
Black. But, it is fun to play the field sometimes.
Americano, sugar-free caramel syrup, milk.
By the way, a cousin recently asked me to explain the difference between cafe au lait, espresso, cappuccino. And I immediately went to this chart!
My favorite “at this time” (it changes) is a Raspberry Latte, but IRE flavors, being an old guy, I would point out that with the advent of specialty coffees based on arabica beans the standard coffees you get in typhical restaurants has gotten a lot better. Having drank coffee most of my many years I’m amazed at how good it’s gotten. Once I was thought churlish for asking for ‘fresh’ coffee and now it’s de rigueur.
Cafe Breve. Espresso and steamed half and half. Yum decadence :)
Simple – drip, black.
Doppio, extra foamy macchiato
A latte with a double shot of FlowingData, please!
Or at least the poster? Please?
Make mine mocha!
(And check out this utterly confusing chart from the Nespresso company. I like their coffee machine, but this graphic sure doesn’t guide me towards, well, anything.)
http://www.nespresso.com/#/us/en/coffee_nespresso/grands_crus
I like an undertow. Short cup, put some caramel syrup in the bottom. Half filled with cold breve, layer 2 hot shots of espresso on top. Chug.
The hot/cold pair is awesome. I think this is the best way to consume caffeine.
Our little studio is typically all about the Americano, but the summer months have induced a heavy ice coffee regiment. And that print sure would look nice on our wall.
I like cappuccino with whipped cream and melted chocolate on the bottom..delicious
Double Tall Americano…please.
Mocha!
The Eiskaffee, no question!
I love it black, no sugar, pure arabica… Intense !
Or with Irish Whiskey, of course
One straight shot of espresso in a thick cup !
FLAT WHITE all the way (from my favourite Federation Coffee in Brixton, London)
I like straight black coffee. I also like coffee that keeps me going in the classroom.
A Flat White based on a double espresso made with some interesting beans to provide a fantastic rich, deep and fruity flavour. Topped off with textured milk and a rosette.
Beautiful!
Black.
whoa
A day without coffee is like sleep, and starting a day out with one, or two, or three of any of these coffee drinks is like sticking your finger into a light socket. So thank you. I need a new goal, and that is to start my day sticking my finger into at least one of these fancy pantsers before attempting to negotiate with the outside world – outside my fingers, that is.
Only freshly roasted beans, ground right before brewing in a French Press….cream or white chocolate….delicious!
I am always down for a pumpkin latte or a caramel macchiato.
Cappuccino :)
Americano. But not just any Americano.
Have you ever looked back from where you are, to wonder what shaped the chain of events that led to your current unusual behaviour?
Addiction. Beautiful addiction. Opening the dark places of the mind to the artful hand of caffeinated consciousness.
I start the week by pulling out my popcorn popper, and roasting a few ounces of the finest green beans I can lay my hands on. It’s still hard for me to understand how the roasting process unlocks the face of god from those sleeping wonders. Listening to the crack, smelling perfection, then scraping and cooling in the crisp morning light.
Then, each morning thereafter, I savor their maturation as they erupt aroma, first from the cone grinder, then from espresso machine, then from my cup.
Huh…I remember preground coffee like a foodie remembers prewrapped cheese slices.
Caribou House coffee with a French Vanilla Coffee Mate (liquid) – Yummm!
I drink too much double espresso :)
simply black coffee and it should be cold
Ah, Brendan, you are the Balzac of my interwebbed caffeine-hazed morning.
A Gibraltar. Before 7am. Maybe two depending on how good a kip I had the night before.
Macchiato!
I love me a nice non-fat vanilla latte (iced for summer). After noon, I prefer to order half caf. In December, it’s all about the peppermint mochas :)
Iced cold-brewed toddy. Delish.
mocha for president!
I love home-roasted kenyan (french roast), with half-half and raw sugar
The rocket shot, bold coffee with a shot of espresso. Classic.
I want this poster because I live at the intersection at Edward Tufte and borderline medically dangerous caffeine addition.
My drink? Strawberry carmel chai tea with one pump mocha and two pumps cinnamon.
Sumatra or Yirgacheffe brewed in a french press and served in a china cup.
Three millenia and three galaxies away, as the first dawn rises on a planet I newly terraformed, my friend drone brings me strong, swirling black coffee, genetically engineered to the perfect taste: aah, that first sip. ‘It could only be you groaning for coffee at the end of your sleep cycle,” my friend drone notes dryly.
Coffee + Infographics? Too much awesome.
ok i drink super-caffeinated black but my partner drinks some decaf latte thing with something ….
ok i drink super-caffeinated black but my partner drinks some decaf latte thing with something ….
that coffee poster is my favourite one. I still have the original post saved in google reader :) it would be awesome to win that!
lol – my favourite is just the simple latté
When I was in college, one local coffee shop offered a drink called the “Black Widow” – drip coffee with 6 shots of espresso. I basically lived off of those things for 4 years.
French press, made just a little too strong :).
Or at a shop, a simple macchiato will do me fine.
Italian cappuccino!
Iced Thai coffee. And did I mention that I like your site? I look forward to the graphic presentation of the data gathered in this contest…
Call me Latte. Some years ago – never mind how long precisely – having little or no coffee in my house, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would sail about a little and see the java parts of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the sleepiness, and regulating my wakefulness. Whenever I find myself growing tired about the mouth; whenever it is a dull, drowsy November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffeehouses, and snoring up the rear of every wedding I attend; and especially whenever my typos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong caffeinated drink to prevent me from deliberately falling asleep in the street, and methodically nodding off in my hat – then, I account it high time to get to the local coffeehouse as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pillow and curfew bell. With a philosophical flourish the barista throws himself into the grind; I quietly take a sip. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the coffee with me.
–Adapted from the beloved _Moby_Dick_ to express my love of lattes!
Basic black with soy milk (warmed first so it doesn’t get chunky).
When my get up and go has got up and went (“bonus points” to those who know what this is from), nothing beats a ginormous Cafe Americano!
Perfectly executed cappuccino (1 part espresso, 1 part milk, 1 part foam). Or Irish coffee.
Iced Americano!
How you make it depends on the day – it’s what you make it with that matters… I’m currently enjoying Jaspers Cafe Femenino; fair trade, organic, shade grown, and produced by women! I kid you not.
