Design student Kenichi Tanaka animates the history of Japan for his final thesis project.
He pokes fun at his culture a little bit there in the beginning, yeah? I feel like something is getting lost in translation.
Update: The English version was taken down, unfortunately. Here’s the original Japanese version. The graphics are still in English, so you can probably understand most of it without the narration.

how is this done? is the animation all done in flash? What other programs would be able to create this kind of animation. At the moment I use illustrator and apple iworks to make straight maps/graphics.
any help is most appreciated.
if you google ‘motion graphics’ you’ll find some resources, but the two main ones that i’ve heard of are adobe after effects and cinema 4d.
You might consider contacting Kenichi Tanaka to learn more about how he created this. This piece could be created using both Adobe Flash and After Effects, as well as a host of other animation tools. It’s very clever; thanks for sharing it!

Overall I found this visualization quite effective. Its playfulness is delightful, and the animation is just superb.
@Nathan: The stereotypes at the beginning are somewhat common currency in Japan.
I can think of lots of other parts of contemporary Japanese life that I would love to see the designer tackle, such as land use in urban areas, the trend towards merging towns and other larger administrative jurisdictions, sales of foods by region and season, or a visualization of the number of photographs taken during cherry blossom viewing.

he created it, so he can do what he wants with it. i guess he just wasn’t prepared for the online criticism (your comment, example :). it can be rough.
