the question is, if you aren't using last fm to keep data on your listening, what are you using? Its a low/no investment data transfer, all in the background, with some added benefits. But best of all, there is tons of data you can do stuff with, especially as you start putting in years of listening. You should check it out regardless

And for non-Mac users, a simple visualization of Last.fm listening history is LastGraph http://lastgraph.aeracode.org/

E.g. mine http://bit.ly/6weRR9 (PDF)

LukeLucas - I doubt if there'd be something like this for HypeMachine, however you can connect your HypeMachine listening to your last.fm account. http://blog.hypem.com/2008/02/lastfm-hypem-scrobbling-awesomeness/

Thanks for the tip, I just tried the software and it's pretty cool! It took a while to retrieve my data, but once it's done, it's very fun to explore.
You have an immediate overview of when you listen to your music (big shift when I moved to another timezone), what songs you play most often (coloured) and how you re-listen to certain songs (connected with red lines).
The killer feature for me is that you can listen to your full songs (since it uses your iTunes library, not a 30 seconds preview) and how you can relate your songs to your photos in iPhoto. The music that played with a slideshow for a certain trip was spot on and brought back more memories than the pictures alone.
I wished the tool could also explore my iTunes music history (merged with my Last.fm history), but so far, it's the best Last.fm api tool I've seen.
Is it a reason to start using Last.fm? Maybe. You should start using Last.fm if you're interested in music and data. :-)
